Projects
These are simple descriptions of the projects that will be assigned
throughout the semester. As projects are assigned, a complete rubric
will be available here for download. Exemplary student work will
be posted here, as well.
Project One: A Mutable Feast
Re-create a classic composition from European
still life painting that substitutes present-day industrial food
products and the crops that go into them for the original foods and
other items in the still life. Use image manipulation and compositing
techniques, and draw your sources from downloaded and scanned images,
photographs, and/or scanned objects. Due Feb. 15. Download guidelines (pdf).
Student Work: Matt Ellis, Beth
Gatza, Kyle Jackson, James
Lord,
Robyn Reeves
Project Two
Create a Flash animation that illustrates either
one of the food systems discussed by Pollan so far: industrial agriculture,
big organic, or small-farm pastoral. You may make an animated schematic
diagram or create a more scene-like narrative; however, you must
use sound and on-screen text. Due March 27. Download guidelines (pdf).
Student Work: Beth Gatza, James
Lord, Brandon Quigley, Robyn Reeves
Project Three
Produce a Web site that traces the origins of one meal and presents
that information in an engaging and informative way that incorporates
the various multimedia forms we explore this semester. This
complex project will mimic closely the development process used in
commercial production, and you’ll be asked to define a role
prior to starting production and be required to meet particular benchmarks
throughout to make sure that you are on track. Your grade will
be based equally on the quality of the finished project, the thoroughness
of your development stage, and the effectiveness of your specific
contribution.
