Evaluation

Because everyone comes to this course with differing levels of experience, evaluation will be holistic to take into account individual improvement. You will meet with me at midterm for a personal portfolio review that will be an opportunity for us to candidly address how the class has been going and to get a cumulative grade based on work completed so far.

You can earn up to 1000 points over the course of the semester; the final grading scale is based on a 100-point increment scale (A=900, B=800, etc.). The breakdown of the points is as follows:

Project 1: 150 pts
Project 2: 200 pts
Final Project: 300 pts
100 pts for product + 100 pts for process + 100 pts for your role
Technical Homework: 8 @ 15 pts = 120 pts
Reading Responses: 10 @ 10 pts = 100 pts
Creative Notebook: 10 @ 5 pts + up to 30 pts for exceptional work = 80 pts
Participation: 50 pts

In addition to extra credit for attending a second field trip, other opportunities may offered from time to time for films or lectures related to course themes.

Accommodations

Pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act and SIUC’s longstanding commitment to equal opportunity for students with disabilities, I am committed to making reasonable accommodations to help all students succeed in this course.  Please contact me in the first two weeks of the semester if you anticipate needing assistive technology, additional time, or other forms of support, and I will be more than happy to work something out.  If your circumstances change during the course of the semester, please let me know as soon as possible so alternate accommodations can be arranged.  I also encourage everyone to take advantage of SIUC’s various student support services, including the Writing Center, Disability Support Services, and the Counseling Center, and occasionally I recommend students who seem to be having trouble in class pay one of these offices a visit.
