You will complete numerous exercises and two projects over the course of the semester as well as assigned readings, required reading responses, in-class discussions, quizzes, homework assignments, and critiques. We meet less than four hours per week; plan on spending at least an equivalent amount of time on work for this course outside of class. Preparation for and participation in discussions and critiques is essential. This course requires steady work and creative thinking. Last-minute cramming will be evident in the quality of the work you produce, and shoddy work is disrespectful to your classmates, me, and above all, yourself.
You will maintain a sketchbook over the course of the semester in which you will complete homework assignments; clip and paste visual material from nature, art, and popular culture; and make thumbnail sketches and storyboards of your project ideas. This sketchbook will be reviewed at midterm and graded at the end of the semester.
You will also participate in two public, online forums: a class blog and Flickr online digital photo sharing. The class blog is an interactive publishing tool that will host our course notes, your reading responses, and announcements for related activities. Flickr is a free online community for sharing digital photographs, and it is a great resource for finding and posting copyright-free images. We will set both of these up during the first class meeting.
Lastly, ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. You are given two free absences, excused or unexcused, over the course of the semester. More than two absences will negatively impact your semester grade, excepting extreme and documented circumstances. Late work will only be accepted at the discretion of the instructor and may result in a reduction of your project grade. Work not prepared according to the guidelines laid out in the assignment will be considered late.
