Requirements

This is a demanding course that involves a great deal of assigned reading and independent research. We meet less than four hours per week; plan to spend 6-10 additional hours per week working outside of class, depending on the unit and upcoming deadlines. Preparation for and participation in discussions and critiques is essential. This course requires steady work and creative thinking. Last-minute cramming will be evident in the quality of the work you produce, and shoddy work is disrespectful to your classmates, me, and above all, yourself.

You will complete three major assignments over the course of the semester: a 3-5 page aesthetic and critical analysis of one intermedia art piece and two original intermedia projects. The instructor may grant approval to concentrate on a single, especially ambitious creative project during the practicum portion of the semester. In addition, you will be responsible for attending required visiting artist lectures outside of class, maintaining a creative notebook, and writing three 1-2 page reading responses over the course of the semester. These responses will be posted on a blog to be used for in- and out-of-class discussion.

Lastly, ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY. You are given two free absences, excused or unexcused, over the course of the semester. More than two absences will negatively impact your semester grade, excepting extreme and documented circumstances. Late work will only be accepted at the discretion of the instructor and may result in a reduction of your project grade.
