Soundmarks/Soundscapes
Create a two to four minute sound composition that seeks to capture
the unique sonic environment of a particular place. Include
one or two personal “soundmarks” to anchor in your composition
and help to tie together the soundscape as you build it. You
must include both a stereo sound “field” and mono sound
elements in your three-track (minimum) composition. Things
to think about and authors to return to include:
- Will you choose the “hi-fi” sounds of the natural
world or the “lo-fi” sounds of the city? What
does such a choice imply? (Wrightson and Tonkiss)?
- How will you design the soundscape to give your listener a sense
of location and distance (Wrightson)?
- What is the role of silence in the place? In your composition?
(Tonkiss)
- How are the sounds you choose bound up with the identity of a
place? Of the people who inhabit that place? (Moore)
- How might the sounds you choose define an “us” who
belongs in that place and/or imply a “them” who does
not? (Moore)
- What “work” are you asking your listener to do, and
what does it mean for them to do it? (Moore)
