Week 1
Course introduction and overview; questionnaire; server introduction; podcasting demonstration and introduction to Audacity; signup for podcast reports; historical and social impact of digital audio; listening exercises.

Week 2
Elements of Sound; digital audio formats; generating sound in Audacity.
Project 1: Sound Generator Composition

Weeks 3-4
Introduction to field recording: microphones, minidisk/mp3/flash card recorder operation; multitrack editing and effects in Audacity.
Project 2: Audio Portrait

Weeks 5-6
Advanced field recording techniques; conventional and experimental narratives; continued development of editing skills.
Project 3: Audio Narrative

Weeks 7-8
Appropriating and reusing sound in the digital age; copyrights and wrongs; the open source and creative commons movements; intermediate editing skills.
Project 4: Mash-up

Week 9
Transmission arts:webstreaming low-power radio, mobile phones.

Weeks 10-12
Sound-in-space
Project 5: Site-specific sound installation

Weeks 13-16
Sound for the web; Photoshop and Dreamweaver demos
Final Group Project: Audio Tour
