About Me
I am an interdisciplinary artist examining citizenship, public space, landscape, and memory through arts practice, writing, and occasional curatorial work. My frequently collaborative work takes many forms, including web platforms and multimedia, print materials, group events, video, and radio transmissions. I'm currently working on two major projects. The first is tentatively titled “Around Crab Orchard,” a video essay examining the intersections of nature, militarism, secrecy, and knowledge at one ordinary site in Illinois. My other major project is working with my partner, Nicholas Brown, on preparing the image-text book “Re-Collecting Blackhawk,” for publication and developing a multimedia companion.
My artwork has appeared in exhibitions and screenings mounted by the Smart Museum (Chicago); The Gallery Project (Ann Arbor); Sea and Space Gallery (Los Angeles); The Unconvention (Minneapolis); Artlink (Belgrade, Serbia); Worth Ryder Gallery (University of California Berkeley); Institute for Quotidian Arts and Letters (Milwaukee); Columbia College (Chicago); Mess Hall (Chicago); SOFA Gallery (Indiana University); Kupfer Center (University of Wisconsin Madison); and the Centro Cultural Rosa Luxemburg (Buenos Aires, Argentina), among many others. Writing is an important part of my practice, and I've published in the Journal of Aesthetics and Protest, Acme, The Democratic Communiqué, Critical Planning and Art Journal.
I grew up in Los Angeles, went to Yale University for my undergraduate degree (1997), and earned an MFA in studio art from the University of Illinois (2004). I taught for three years in the Department of Cinema and Photography at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale before moving to the Intermedia Program at the University of Iowa in 2008. I teach specialized classes in time based media and art and ecology, as well as core courses in the undergraduate and graduate Intermedia curricula.
